Hall of Fame - Karl Anderson
Karl Anderson’s career began in 1958 after he received his degree in chemistry from the Ohio State University and joined Hanna Paint Chemical Coatings in Columbus, Ohio. He was involved in pioneering work in developing coatings for several companies such as precoat, roll coater, g.e., and others. In the late sixties, he left Hanna for Lilly Industrial Coatings in Indianapolis to become group leader for coil coatings under Bob Pickering, another NCCA Hall of Famer.
He returned to Hanna in 1971 as director of the coil coating division, where he developed coil coating appliance applications for g.e. and whirlpool.
In 1981, he became technical director for A-Tech Chemical Coatings in Toledo. It was there when he began work on the NCCA Model-a Ford project, which was completed in 1986. In 1985, he built a research lab in Ohio State University’s research park, with specific applications for coil coatings for appliance and automotive uses.
As vice president for product development for coil coatings, Karl led the development of weldable coating for automotive use. He also developed the product “first coat,” for which he holds six domestic and 16 international patents.
Thanks to his involvement in the NCCA Model-a Ford project, Karl helped to persuade General Motors to produce 400 Corsica car hoods from totally prepainted coil stock. In 2001, he retired after 42 years in the coil coating industry.
