Centria Wins 2006 NCCA Environmental Excellence Award

CLEVELAND, OH (Oct. 6, 2006) – The National Coil Coating Association (NCCA) has presented its 2006 Environmental Excellence Award to Centria of Ambridge, Pa. The award was announced at NCCA’s Fall Technical Meeting in Baltimore on Sept. 27.

“After closely examining all candidates, our committee concluded that Centria is a great example for all of us and the most worthy recipient of this high honor,” said Greg Gemgnani, the chair of NCCA’s Environmental Health & Safety Committee.

The NCCA committee judged all entries based on their success in minimizing the generation of hazardous and non-hazardous wastes. The award committee examined in-plant processes and alternatives that reduce or eliminate the toxicity or quantity of pollutants released into the environment.

The award recognized a recent major project by Centria at Ambridge to replace old ovens and an oxidizer system with a state-of-the-art, closed-loop oven and oxidizer system. Using heat exchangers, the new system recovers heat from oxidizers and re-uses volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from burnt solvent. The project reduced natural gas consumption by 20 percent.

Centria’s Ambridge plant also received Pennsylvania’s 2005 Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence. Of 78 applicants in the state competition, Centria was one of only 12 companies to receive the award, which recognizes businesses for addressing environmental problems in their communities.

NCCA is the world’s leading association of businesses engaged in the process of coating coiled metals. Coil coating is an automated process that allows a high degree of customized coatings, producing a cost-effective quality product. More than 110 companies from 13 countries are members of NCCA.
